The Delta State Police Command has formally recognized the apprehension and custody of police officers allegedly involved in the shooting of a Vigilante Commander and two members of the Idjerhe Kingdom’s vigilante group.

The detained officers reportedly attacked Jesse town, the traditional headquarters of Idjerhe Kingdom, on January 30, 2024, where they shot the vigilante commander, Mr Freeborn Ofeshohwo (alias Cornerstone), and two other members identified as Friday Johnson and Enor Young.
In response to public outcry, the state commissioner of police, CP Abaniwonda Olufemi, denounced the shooting and assured the public that the incident would be thoroughly investigated. The CP, in a statement by the State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bright Edafe, confirmed the identification and detention of the officers involved.

The statement titled “Re-Protest, Anger As Policemen Shoot Idjerhe Kingdom Vigilante Leaders And Two Others: CP Abaniwonda Olufemi Condemns The Act, Orders The Detention Of The Officers Involved, And SCID To Commence A Full-Scale Investigation” was released on Friday.
The Commissioner directed the State Criminal Investigation Department to initiate a comprehensive investigation, and the implicated officers are in custody, with internal disciplinary action underway. CP Olufemi emphasized that such conduct by officers would not be tolerated under his watch and promised decisive action in accordance with the law.
Warning against unprofessionalism, the CP reminded officers to uphold the tenets of professional policing, respecting citizens’ rights. He urged the public, particularly Idjerhe Kingdom residents and the victims’ families, to remain calm, assuring them of justice.
The arrest follows protests across Idjerhe Kingdom, triggered by the incident reported by Ejes Gist News. The victims are receiving medical attention for their injuries, and Chief Onosia James Obriki, the Otota of Idjerhe Kingdom, condemned the attack, urging a thorough investigation and the prosecution of the implicated officers
