In a shocking revelation, Solomon Adeola, the chairman of the Senate committee on appropriations, has accused soldiers manning checkpoints near the Ikeja area of Lagos state of being involved in the robbery and killing of his aide, Adeniyi Oluwatosin Sanni, on August 5, 2023. Senator Adeola made this distressing claim through a statement he personally signed and provided to reporters in Abuja, with support from his media aide, Kayode Odunaro.

According to the statement, Adeola recounted the harrowing details of the incident. His aide, Sanni, was reportedly stopped at a checkpoint near the Ojodu-Berger region of Lagos while en route to his home in Isheri.

“Security agents” at the checkpoint requested the documents for the car he was driving. Sanni’s wife remotely sent the necessary documents via WhatsApp to his phone. During a subsequent call, Sanni informed his wife that soldiers were still inspecting the vehicle’s particulars. Tragically, this was the last conversation before Sanni’s wife learned of his death.

The lifeless body of Adeniyi Oluwatosin Sanni, punctuated with bullet wounds, was discovered near the Toyota Bus Stop area of Oshodi, close to a military barrack.

Senator Adeola expressed his conviction that Sanni was killed by a syndicate of soldiers operating under Brigadier General Nsikan John Edet, the newly deployed Commander of the 9 Brigade at Ikeja Cantonment of the Nigerian Army. He alleged that these soldiers used checkpoints as a means of robbing lone occupants of vehicles, a pattern which, according to sources, was corroborated by an incident that occurred on August 17, 2023, resulting in the death of another Nigerian in a similar manner.

Adeola called for an investigation and the apprehension of those responsible for Sanni’s death, urging the Chief of Army Staff, Major General Taoreed Lagbaja, to intervene and ensure justice is served.

The senator emphasized the need for the Nigerian Army to address these allegations and to ensure that rogue elements within its ranks do not continue to engage in criminal activities against innocent citizens. He also highlighted that Sanni’s possessions, including his black Toyota Camry and phones, are yet to be recovered.

The shocking incident raises concerns not only about the safety of individuals at military checkpoints but also about the role of security forces in maintaining the safety and well-being of Nigerian citizens. The call for a thorough investigation and accountability is paramount in this disturbing situation.
