Numerous posts on social media alleged that Justice Ugo had resigned due to pressure to compromise democracy by favoring President Tinubu in the tribunal’s decision. These posts quoted an earlier statement attributed to Justice Ugo, where he supposedly voiced concerns about the government’s interference with the judiciary and the impact on Nigeria’s democracy.

However, Bukola Gaar, head of media and personal assistant to the President of the Court of Appeal, categorically dismissed these reports on Thursday, labeling them as fake. While Justice Ugo has neither confirmed nor debunked the statement attributed to him, an appeal court official emphasized that the reports were untrue and should be disregarded.

Another senior official of the court also referred to the information as ‘fake news,’ pointing out that it was the result of ‘evil rumor mongers.’ This unnamed source, who lacked authorization to speak to the press, clarified that no such event occurred. The source highlighted that the petitions’ parties were currently engaged in the process of filing and exchanging their final written addresses, and once completed, the panel would set a date for the parties to appear in court to adopt their processes before fixing a judgment date.

In response to these false reports, the court is expected to issue a formal statement on the matter later today. The source expressed hope that appropriate measures would be taken to deter the spread of such fake news in the future.”
