In a move aimed at furthering the fight against corruption and reforming key institutions, President Bola Tinubu has exercised his powers, as established in Section 3(6) of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000, to appoint a new management team for the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC). The new leadership, which is pending Senate confirmation, was announced in a press release dated October 17, 2023.

The appointments are as follows:

  1. Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu – Chairman / Chief Executive Officer, ICPC
  2. Mr. Clifford Okwudiri Oparaodu – Secretary to the Commission, ICPC

The outgoing ICPC Chairman, whose tenure is set to expire on February 3, 2024, had requested to proceed on pre-end of tenure leave starting from November 4, 2023.

Following the President’s approval of this request, Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu has been nominated as the new Chairman, subject to confirmation by the Nigerian Senate.

Meanwhile, the position of Secretary to the Commission does not require Senate confirmation, and as directed by the President, Mr. Clifford Okwudiri Oparaodu’s appointment takes immediate effect.

Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, the nominated Chairman, has an extensive background in law and has spearheaded significant reforms as the Attorney General of Jigawa State since September 2019. With a wealth of experience, he holds Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctorate degrees in Law. His dedication to the legal profession was recognized in October 2023 when he was named a Senior Advocate of Nigeria-designate.

He has served commendably in the public sector and previously held the position of Member of the Rivers State Judicial Service Commission. Additionally, he served as Chairman of the Caretaker Committee of Port Harcourt City Local Government Council.

President Bola Tinubu has called upon the new ICPC management team to uphold the highest standards of integrity and impartiality as they execute their duties. The President emphasized the importance of their role in addressing all matters before them without fear or favor.

These appointments mark a significant step in the ongoing efforts to strengthen the fight against corruption and reform key institutions in Nigeria, as part of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope mandate. The nominees, upon confirmation, will play crucial roles in the ICPC’s mission to combat corrupt practices and related offenses in the country.
