Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu’s Credibility Crisis Weakens ECOWAS’ Response to Niger Coup.

In a video that has now gone viral, a South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) correspondent revealed concerns over the current state of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), stating that it is not as strong as it used to be. According to the correspondent, the reason for this decline lies in the lack of legitimacy and credibility of ECOWAS’ Chairman, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu.

The correspondent highlighted that President Tinubu’s credibility has been questioned in Nigeria due to doubts surrounding the legitimacy of the election results. Despite his strong statement condemning the coup d’état in Niger Republic, many in Nigeria perceive his government as illegitimate, which, in turn, undermines ECOWAS’ position and ability to respond effectively to regional challenges.

The situation in the region has become increasingly unstable, especially with neighboring countries like Niger and Mali facing sanctions from the United States for their military officials’ actions. In the past, ECOWAS was known for its quick and credible responses to regional challenges, but the current circumstances have put the regional body on shaky ground.

The recent coup in Niger, where President Mohamed Bazoum was detained and overthrown by the Presidential Guard on July 26, 2023, has further intensified concerns about the effectiveness of ECOWAS’ response.
