Gunmen kill Rivers community youth leader, Ebenezer Matthew
On Wednesday night, gunmen suspected of being cultists murdered Ebenezer Matthew, the Youth President of the Abarikpo community in the Akoh Kingdom, Ahoada East Local Council, Rivers State.
His death occurred less than three months after suspected cultists raped and murdered a woman in the community.
Ekeakita Hector Chinem, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Akoh Youth Congress, confirmed the incident yesterday and stated that the deceased may have been targeted by the assailants due to his stance on anti-cultism activities in the community.
Chinem stated in a telephone interview with newsmen, “Yes, it is true that Mathew was murdered in his hometown and his father’s compound last night.” Only thing I know about Matthew is that he does not condone illegal activity.
I believe that his steadfastness in fighting against cultism and insecurity in the community may have contributed to his demise.
Chinem stated that the police had been notified and that the body would be buried immediately.
The PR officer, who urged security agencies and political leaders to increase security in the region, bemoaned the increase in insecurity in the area.
He stated, “No longer do people sleep with both eyes closed. Every day, we document homicides. As of last month, April, roughly 36 deaths had been recorded.
“Ubie has the highest death toll with approximately sixteen. We have six in Ahoada and three in Akoh, where numerous motorcycles are stolen on a daily basis along the Odiemenyi road.”
Grace Iringe-Koko, the spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, confirmed the incident and emphasised that the police have identified the ringleader of the assailants when contacted.
She stated that the ringleader and other perpetrators have not yet been apprehended, adding that efforts are being made to apprehend them as the investigation continues.
