Renowned Nobel Laureate, Prof Wole Soyinka, outlined his unique approach to critiquing political leadership during a courtesy visit to President Bola Tinubu in Lagos on Sunday.

In a rare demonstration of patience and a commitment to allowing leaders time to navigate the complexities of governance, Soyinka disclosed that he plans to withhold his assessment of Tinubu’s government for a year.

The iconic dramatist explained, “Well, you know, something you may have noticed about me is that most heads of state, when they take office, I always leave them alone for about the first year…Because they need time.”

Soyinka’s policy of a one-year waiting period stems from his belief that leaders, upon assuming office, face the arduous task of not just starting from ground zero but often beginning even below that point. This delay, in his view, allows leaders the necessary space to “make up” for lost grounds.

“I know when they come in, they don’t start from ground zero. They often start even lower than ground zero and they have to make up,” Soyinka emphasized.

This unconventional approach was unveiled during a courtesy visit to Tinubu, who is currently on holiday in Lagos. Soyinka’s principle of patient observation before criticism offers a unique perspective in the realm of political analysis.

When probed about the rationale behind this waiting period, he concluded, “So, I’m adopting the same principle this time. When you see me next year, ask the same question again and listen to my answer.”

As Soyinka sets this precedent, it raises intriguing questions about the impact of instant critiques in today’s fast-paced political landscape and whether a more measured, reflective approach is essential for a comprehensive evaluation of leadership.
