EFCC Clarifies Position on Prosecuting Naira Abusers Before Bobrisky’s Case.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has issued a statement clarifying its stance on prosecuting politicians and celebrities who were seen abusing the Nigerian currency at social functions prior to February 7, 2024, the launch date of the commission’s Special Task Force against Naira Abuse.

Following the recent sentencing of crossdresser Idris ‘Bobrisky’ Okuneye to six-month imprisonment without the option of a fine for spraying the naira at an event, questions arose regarding the non-prosecution of other prominent figures, including business mogul Obi Cubana, minister of arts Hannatu Musanawa, and Regina Daniels, wife of senator Ned Nwoko, who were also captured on video engaging in similar acts.

In response to the public outcry and speculations of unfair treatment, the head of EFCC’s media unit, Dele Oyewale, clarified that individuals who were seen abusing the naira before the establishment of the Special Task Force would not face prosecution.

Oyewale emphasized that the commission would only pursue cases involving currency abuse that occurred after February 7, 2024.

“Old videos being exhumed and flying around for the attention of the commission are noted as the commission is sensitive to the fact that its Special Task Force against Naira Abuse and Dollarization of the economy commenced operations on February 7, 2024,” Oyewale stated in a Sunday statement.

He further asserted, “However, going forward, new videos of such infractions will be investigated and prosecuted.”

The clarification aims to address concerns regarding perceived inconsistencies in the enforcement of laws against currency abuse.

By establishing a clear timeline for prosecution, the EFCC seeks to uphold accountability while ensuring fairness in its approach to combating financial crimes.
