At least twenty Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SAN) have been engaged by the Labour Party (LP) to challenge the outcome of the February 25 presidential election on behalf of its presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

According to sources within the party who spoke with Punch, the attorneys selected from various chambers were allegedly given materials that would be used as evidence in court.

Remember that on Wednesday, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) proclaimed Bola Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress candidate, the victor of the poll.

Speaking on the Labour Party’s legal action, Umar Farouk noted that certain SANs have shown a willingness in taking part in the lawsuit to support Obi.

We have more than 20 SANs who are eager to take part and contribute their services for the renewal and emergence of a new Nigeria, the speaker declared. Our attorneys are working on it as we speak.

But, this is not a topic that belongs in a newspaper. I can only say that we have begun “trekking” toward the court.

Farouk responded, “The court is not a polling box that they can destroy and put in what they want, when asked if the party leadership and the candidate had been able to gather real proof beyond the supposed isolated incidences the APC claimed the Labour Party was dangling to win over the public.

“Let the APC preempt the court if they believe they can. They had predicted the outcome of the election and declared they would win it by any means necessary. Wait and see, shall we. The judiciary is a distinct entity from INEC.

“We have observed the commission’s independence. Yet when it comes to a topic of this importance, we also need to look at how impartial the judiciary is. Let’s see what consolation it can bring to the masses. Check to see if the judiciary, like INEC, has dashed Nigerians’ hopes.

But, Farouk was unable to provide a precise timeframe for when the case would be filed.

“Based on the record we have in front of us, we are saying Obi is the winner,” he continued. But, INEC took another action. They hastily followed out their employer’s strategy.

Thus, if victory is being disputed, we have every right to declare it.

“Atiku and the PDP have the legal authority and supporting evidence to assert that their mandate was illegally obtained. The court is currently the sole arbiter.

“So many people can make the same assertion. Based on the facts that is presented to it, the judiciary renders a decision.
