“The effects of poverty are visible on the faces of our people. Poverty is not inherited; it is a product of society. Our objective is the eradication of poverty. “We are here to discuss Nigeria and nation-building, not partisan politics,” he said in a statement issued by Abiodun Oladunjoye, Director of Information.

“We are a family occupying a single residence and sleeping in separate bedrooms. If we adopt this perspective and persist, we will lead our people out of poverty. “A determined mind is conducive to producing results,” he added.

Good governance, according to President Tinubu, will safeguard the future of democracy.

“Our cultural and political diversity is present in this room, but we are one nation. The stability and cohesion of the nation depend on us.

“We live in a democracy, and it is our responsibility to preserve it. It is a laborious system that is difficult to administer. If you think it is simple, consider the nations that have been democratic for over a century.

“We have done an excellent job of establishing a democracy. We have completed our campaign and reached our current destination. We must serve our people, President Tinubu told the governors, assuring them that his door would always be open.

The president stated that he was willing to share ideas, strengthen institutions, and develop bottom-up frameworks that will improve Nigerians’ standard of living.

“What are our options in the face of crushing poverty? What are our development objectives? Before the nation sank, we took the bull by the horns by removing the elephant in the room.

“We require synergy to combat other vices, such as corruption. We are attempting to remove smugglers from the way. How can we collaborate to stimulate the economy and mobilise resources? We must both think and act.

“After eliminating subsidies, the Federation Account must accumulate savings,” he said.

Tinubu stated that the education sector must be enhanced as part of efforts to alleviate poverty and destitution:

“How can we deal with the unacceptable level of poverty? How much do we invest in education, the only weapon against poverty? I am prepared to work with you.”

The President, who also drew attention to the security problems in some states, admonished the governors to make every effort to address the security situation, rather than believing that it is only their responsibility.

The governors, who took turns speaking, praised the president’s decision to eliminate subsidies, inclusive leadership, and statesmanship.

They congratulated Tinubu for tackling the fuel subsidy behemoth and promised to collaborate with him to mitigate the decision’s short-term repercussions.

AbdulRasaq, Chairman of the NGF and Governor of Kwara State, thanked the President for the invitation to discuss the challenges of poverty and security, promising that the governors would assist the Federal Government in achieving its human development objectives.

“The NGF will continue the tradition of working with you constitutionally and in harmony,” he said.

Vice President Kashim Shettima and the new Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, attended the meeting, along with 22 governors and two deputy governors from Edo and Niger States.

The governors provided recommendations highlighting the plight of citizens in their respective states and assured the president of their support in proposing solutions through the National Economic Council.
