In Nigeria, the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, MDCN, recently conducted assessment examinations for foreign-trained medical and dental graduates.
The examinations took place over two days, on July 12 and July 13, 2023, at the University College Hospital, Ibadan in Oyo State.
A total of 734 foreign-trained graduates participated in the assessment examination, with 529 medical and dental graduates failing to meet the required standards.

Out of the participants, only 189 medical graduates and 16 dental graduates managed to pass the examination, while 515 medical graduates and 14 dental graduates did not meet the passing criteria.
The primary aim of these examinations is to evaluate candidates’ competency in applying their basic medical sciences and clinical skills in a healthcare setting.
This measure is crucial for ensuring the safety and quality of healthcare services provided in Nigeria.
The MDCN, which is responsible for regulating the practice of Medicine, Dentistry, and Alternative Medicine in the country, believes that the assessment exam is necessary to safeguard the nation’s healthcare system.

Dr. Tajudeen Sanusi, the Registrar of MDCN, expressed concern about the pass rate, which stands at 27.4 percent, deeming it poor.
However, he emphasized the importance of maintaining high standards to protect the health of Nigerians.
Dr. Sanusi also pointed out that such assessments are a standard global practice, ensuring that doctors who trained in one jurisdiction can demonstrate their qualifications in another jurisdiction.
In conclusion, the assessment examination conducted by the MDCN is compulsory for all foreign-trained doctors intending to practice in Nigeria.
Its purpose is to assess the candidates’ capabilities and guarantee that they can deliver safe and effective medical care in the country.
