Nigeria – Former Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode has strongly criticized former President Olusegun Obasanjo for his recent actions towards Oyo traditional rulers during an event, describing it as a “grave insult to the Yoruba people and our traditional institutions.”

Obasanjo reportedly ordered the Oyo traditional rulers to stand and sit at an event on Friday, a move that has sparked widespread criticism and raised concerns about the respect for traditional institutions.
In a statement posted on his verified X account, Femi Fani-Kayode expressed his deep sadness and mortification over Obasanjo’s actions. He highlighted that Obasanjo was once known for his respect, humility, and reverence for monarchs, even prostrating and kneeling before them when he was President.

Fani-Kayode went on to state, “This is the same OBJ that, once upon a time, displayed his respect, humility, and, I daresay, greatness by bowing, kneeling, and prostrating before our monarchs, even when he was President, yet today he talks to them as if they are his garbage collectors and orders them to jump up and down like a molue driver talking to his beleaguered passengers and a motor park tout talking to a bunch of jobless and worthless underlings.
He expressed concern that Obasanjo’s behavior is a desecration of Yoruba values and an insult to traditional institutions. Fani-Kayode acknowledged his respect and affection for Obasanjo but noted that his association with and support for Peter Obi during the last presidential election has diminished his stature.
Fani-Kayode questioned how a man who dedicated his life to a united Nigeria could support a candidate like Peter Obi, whom he described as a “closet secessionist” and a “religious bigot.” He concluded by urging Obasanjo to respect himself and stop embarrassing those who still have affection and respect for him.
Obasanjo’s actions have sparked a debate on the importance of respecting traditional institutions and cultural values in Nigeria, with many Nigerians expressing their opinions on social media.
