Phenom, a Nigerian hip-hop sensation disclosed a remarkable and somewhat alarming facet of his journey in the music industry. In a candid revelation during the latest episode of the “Terms And Conditions” podcast, Phenom unveiled the astonishing reason behind his initial experimentation with illicit substances.
According to the artist, he began using drugs shortly after embarking on his music career, under the belief that these substances held the power to kindle his creative fire and lead him to produce more chart-topping hits. His drug of choice was cannabis, and Phenom attributed his addiction to the plant to the inspiration it seemingly provided for his first hit song.

Phenom explained, “I wasn’t doing drugs before I ventured into music. I don’t partake in drugs anymore, though. I was using it to boost my creativity. When I started smoking, I began with just puffing. I distinctly remember the first time I smoked; it was the moment I created my first hit song.

I felt like igbo [cannabis] was the catalyst for my musical success. Consequently, I kept returning to it. For instance, ‘Murder Dem,’ my collaboration with Wizkid, was a product of my cannabis-fueled inspiration. I was so high during the recording session that they had to physically hold me in the studio. I continued to rely on smoking weed because I genuinely believed it was the wellspring of my musical prowess.”
It’s noteworthy that Phenom emphasized his current sobriety, having chosen to discontinue his use of drugs. This revelation sheds light on the unconventional and highly personal journey of a musician who once believed that a certain substance was the key to his creative genius.
