The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Administration is facing intense scrutiny over allegations of extravagant spending during Nyesom Wike’s tenure, with concerns centered around the renovation of the minister’s official residence in Lifecamp.

Originally budgeted at N150 million, the contract was purportedly awarded to Julius Berger for a staggering N3,762,500,000 just three months ago, triggering a storm of controversy.

Documents obtained by THE WHISTLER reveal that Wike allegedly orchestrated the redirection of the renovation contract, utilizing the controversial “Emergency Procurement” clause.

This move, criticized by civil servants, is questioned under Section 43(1) of the Procurement Act, which reserves emergency procurement for national threats or natural disasters – circumstances critics argue didn’t align with the renovation’s context, as no damage was reported on the property.

Sources within the minister’s office disclosed that the renovation primarily involves basic tasks such as painting, piping works, electrical, and furnishings.

The escalated costs and deviation from procurement regulations have sparked public outcry, raising questions about fiscal prudence and adherence to due process.

The initial inclusion of the renovation project in the FCT 2023 Supplementary appropriation bill sent to the National Assembly saw specific mention of the minister’s residence removed.

Instead, costs were consolidated into a broader category labeled “Renovation and Completion of Critical Infrastructure in the FCT,” totaling N13,762,500,000. Some view this as a protective measure for the minister amid scrutiny over the inflated contract sum.
