Preventing Provocations, Nigerian High Commission’s Guidelines for a Peaceful AFCON Viewing
As tensions rise ahead of the 2023 AFCON semi-final clash between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and the Bafana Bafana of South Africa, the Nigerian High Commission in South Africa has issued a stern warning to its citizens, urging them to exercise caution and avoid engaging in provocative activities before, during, and after the match.
Scheduled for 6 p.m. on Wednesday, February 7, the highly anticipated showdown will take place at the Stade de la Paix in Bouake. Given the historical backdrop of online disputes and the unfortunate xenophobic attacks against Nigerians in South Africa, the Nigerian High Commission is taking preemptive measures to ensure the safety and well-being of its nationals.
In a statement titled ‘Advisory on safe conduct for Nigerians in South Africa before, during and after 2024 AFCON match between Super Eagles and Bafana Bafana,’ the Nigerian High Commission expressed concern over potentially inflammatory online comments made by some South African citizens.
The comments, largely influenced by the upcoming AFCON semi-final, include veiled threats against activities like “Nigerians cooking jollof rice” and “showing pepper to Nigerians if the Bafana Bafana lose to the Super Eagles.”
The advisory emphasizes the need for Nigerians to be mindful of their utterances, choose safe locations to watch the match, especially in public places, and refrain from engaging in loud, riotous, or provocative celebrations if the Super Eagles emerge victorious. The High Commission urges citizens to uphold the positive conduct for which they are known and to be law-abiding throughout the event.
Importantly, in the event of provocations, the statement advises against retaliation but encourages Nigerians to report incidents to the appropriate authorities.
