The reconciliation attempts led by President Bola Tinubu to mend the strained relations between Rivers State Governor Simi Fubara and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike have crumbled, according to statements from the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The All Progressives Congress (APC) caretaker chairman in Rivers, Tony Okocha, conveyed the disappointing news during a press conference at the party’s national secretariat on Thursday.

He bluntly stated, “Whatever that was, it has broken down, and it has been broken irreconcilably.”

Initially, President Tinubu’s intervention had sparked optimism for a resolution to the longstanding feud between Fubara and Wike. The leaders had engaged in talks at the presidential villa in Abuja, raising hopes for a peaceful resolution.

However, the situation took a tumultuous turn in the past four days, marked by heightened tensions culminating in the demolition of the state House of Assembly complex.

Adding to the political turbulence, 27 assembly members, loyal to Wike, defected to the APC, signaling a significant shift in political allegiances.

Tony Okocha, in his press briefing, discredited the recent budget passed by the Ehie-led faction of the assembly, labeling it as “illegal” and asserting that it would not be recognized.

Moreover, he confirmed ongoing efforts to woo Governor Wike to the APC, underscoring that Wike would assume the role of the party’s leader in the state upon joining.

As the political landscape in Rivers State witnesses these dramatic developments, the once-promising prospect of reconciliation initiated by President Tinubu now seems shattered, leaving the region grappling with increased political tension and uncertainty about its future.
