Federal Government Announces Restructuring of NYSC Program for Safety and Financial Reform.

The Nigerian government has taken decisive steps to enhance the safety of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members by halting deployments to states categorized as “very unsafe.” The move, announced by Minister of Youth, Jamila Ibrahim, during a recent appearance on Channels Television’s “Sunday Politics” show, aims to address growing concerns about the security of corps members during their mandatory national service.

Minister Ibrahim emphasized the government’s commitment to prioritizing the safety of NYSC participants. She disclosed that the decision to cease posting corps members to high-risk states is part of a broader initiative to enhance security measures within the program.

“As an immediate intervention, we have stopped posting corps members to the very unsafe states. We have been doing it in the past to ensure their safety,” Ibrahim stated, underscoring the collaborative effort with security agencies to guarantee the well-being of corps members.

The minister highlighted the multi-sectoral approach to security matters and assured the public that the Ministry of Youth and the NYSC are actively working with security outlets to create a secure environment for all participants.

In addition to the safety measures, Minister Ibrahim shared insights into the government’s ongoing restructuring of the NYSC program. She revealed plans to revisit the allowances of corps members, emphasizing a holistic approach to funding. The minister outlined the broader vision of transforming the NYSC from a mere social program into a self-sustaining organization that equips corps members for the workforce.

“When it comes to remuneration, we are looking at the holistic funding of the NYSC. We have announced a reform of the scheme itself. We want the scheme to go beyond being a social program of the government,” Ibrahim explained, signaling a significant shift in the program’s goals.

Meanwhile, in a separate development, Shelta, a property management company, has announced plans to address the housing needs of NYSC members and low-income earners. The company’s CEO unveiled an initiative aimed at providing affordable housing solutions to alleviate the housing deficit in Abuja.
