Rivers Oil Well Explosion: In its Oil Mining Lease, OML-18 asset in Rivers State, Eroton Exploration and Production Company has reported a fire on a wellhead at its Akaso field.
According to the company, the incident happened last weekend at the Cawthrone Channel operational area.

The first occurred in October 2022, about three months after the company suffered a fire explosion on Akaso Well-14.
According to a statement from the company’s spokesperson, Mercy Max-Ebibai, the well was allegedly releasing hydrocarbons into the environment along with wildfire because of suspected vandalism and bunkering activity on the wellhead’s Xmas tree containment valves.
“An oil-filled wooden boat was initially seen in the area, and a loud bang was also reported,” the statement said.
Due to this, the fires spread to two wellheads, only one of which is still on fire as of this writing. While Akaso15L is still burning, Akaso6LS fire has extinguished.

The company’s well control engineers were collaborating with a seasoned wild well control vendor, she said, who had been contacted to carry out an assessment of the well wildfire situation and develop a technical solution and fire fighting strategy. She also said that an Emergency Response Team had been assembled.
Max-Ebibai added that the business complied with all regulatory requirements and duly notified the appropriate authorities within the permitted timeframe.
She continued by saying that the business was coordinating closely with the appropriate authorities to look into what caused the incident and assess the damage.
