In a solemn announcement, the Ondo State Government has officially confirmed the passing of Governor Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, CON.
The news of his demise, which had circulated widely for several hours, was verified in a statement released by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mrs Bamidele Ademola-Olateju.

Governor Akeredolu, 65, breathed his last in Germany on Wednesday, December 27, 2023, following a valiant battle with prostate cancer. The statement, titled ‘It Is a Sad Day in Ondo State,’ expressed the deep sorrow felt by the government and citizens, stating, “This tragedy has left behind a profound void in our hearts.”
The announcement revealed that Governor Akeredolu, also known as Mr. Rotimi, had been receiving medical treatment in Germany, where he succumbed to complications arising from protracted prostate cancer.
The government expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his support during the governor’s illness, highlighting that an official letter had been dispatched to inform him of the sad news.
Details about the funeral arrangements are expected to be released by the family and the Ondo State Government.
