Chairman, Sues , Demands N100m Compensation

Barr. Julius Abure, the National Chairman of the Labour Party, has filed against the international broadcaster Arise TV for alleged defamation and demanded N100 million in damages.

The platform, according to Abure, gave former Labour Party secretary Comrade Abayomi Arabambi airtime to spread untrue accusations that tarnished his reputation.

He stated that he was suing Arise Television for libel and seeking damages of one hundred million naira for the defamation of his person, character, and reputation.

A perpetual injunction prohibiting Arise Television and its representatives from further slandering Abure’s person, reputation, and character was another request made by Abure.

This was stated in a statement the party released and provided to the media.

The petitions of Abure before the Edo State High Court in Suit No. B/35/2023, filed by his attorney President Aigbokhan, Esq. on January 18, 2023, alleged that the former National Publicity Secretary, Abayomi Arabambi, was granted an interview by Arise TV on its morning show, which was broadcast on YouTube on December 11, 2022, and in which he made several defamatory remarks against him.

According to Abure, some of the defamatory statements in the statement include: “That Barr Julius Abure, the National Chairman of the Labor Party (LP), FORGED a court of Appeal Judgment of the 18th day of November 2022 and enlisted to INEC twenty-seven (27) candidates instead of the legally approved fifteen (15) candidates for the Lagos State House of Assembly,” the statement continued.

“That Barr Julius Abure presented copies as proof to ARISE TV, the morning show, and submitted a FORGED list of Twenty Seven (27) names to INEC on November 25, 2022, signed by Barr Julius Abure in his capacity as National Chairman and Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim in his capacity as National Secretary.”

“That Barr Julius Abure, the National Chairman of the Labour Party, diverted more than Forty Million Naira (40,000, 000, 00) from the sale of party nomination forms into his private transport company account with Access Bank Plc as payment and thereby grossly violated the provisions of the Labour Party Constitution 2019 as amended by enhancing himself dishonestly and subsequently denying the candidates tickets after receiving their money,” the statement reads.
