Militants Abduct Internally Displaced Persons in Gamboru Ngala, Borno State.

 

In a disturbing incident, militants have reportedly abducted Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in a camp located in Gamboru Ngala town, Borno State.

The abduction took place on Sunday but came to light later due to the remote nature of Gamboru Ngala, where jihadists have destroyed telecommunication infrastructure, hindering swift information dissemination.

While the exact number of abductees remains unconfirmed, a resident informed the BBC that approximately 113 people were taken while they were collecting firewood. The abductors allegedly permitted only the very young and elderly to return.

According to the source, “It was on Sunday that we got information that over 200 displaced people went to get firewood, but unfortunately, Boko Haram kidnapped them, allowing only the very young and very old to return.”

Residents also informed the BBC that the majority of those abducted were women who had ventured out in groups to gather firewood for cooking or selling.

Umar Mohammed, the chairman of the local government area where the town is situated, confirmed the abduction but did not specify the exact number of abductees when speaking to the BBC.

As of now, no terrorist organization has claimed responsibility for the abduction. However, Shehu Mada, an anti-jihadist militia leader in the area, attributed the incident to Boko Haram. Boko Haram is notorious for its involvement in abductions and bomb blasts in Borno and other northern Nigerian states.
