Ambali Olatunji, National President of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees, demanded on Monday a 300 percent increase in workers’ pay to offset the effects of the loss of gasoline subsidies.

Olatunji also advocated for the establishment of a single institution to fix the salaries of workers and political office holders to maintain equal because everyone in the country patronises the same market.

The labour leader, who spoke at the launch of NULGE Hotels and Suites in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, also asked for the rapid adoption of the Orosanye Report to decrease the cost of governance, which he noted was too expensive.

“The government should review the Orosanye Report and restructure MDAs so that, at the end of the day, we reduce the cost of governance,” he said. Not only that, but the entourage of aides should be reduced, and the salaries and wages of political officeholders should be reduced.

“We demand that workers’ wages be increased by 300 percent to compensate for the pain we are experiencing.”

“That is the correct path to take. It is time to make palliatives available to mitigate the impact of the elimination of fuel subsidies.”

The labour leader was astounded that “after one month of subsidy removal, nothing has been done by the Federal Government.”

“We are confident that President Bola Tinubu understands what he is doing, but the delay is risky.” “It’s time for him to sit down and address this,” stated the NULGE leader.
