The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has completed its defense in the petition filed by Atiku Abubakar and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) before the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC). After presenting one witness and submitting relevant documents, INEC’s lawyer, Abubakar Mahmoud (SAN), officially closed the case.

The sole witness called by INEC was Dr. Lawrence Bayode, an Information Technology (IT) Practitioner within the commission. Dr. Bayode, who serves as a Deputy Director in INEC’s IT Department, affirmed the occurrence of technical glitches during the transmission of the presidential election results. These issues affected the real-time transmission of the results.

During cross-examination by lawyers representing both the respondents and petitioners, Dr. Bayode emphasized that any discrepancies between electronically or manually transmitted results would not compromise the accuracy of the scores already recorded in the polling unit results sheets (Form EC8A). He provided additional insights and clarifications to support this position.

The conclusion of INEC’s defense marks an important milestone in the ongoing legal proceedings. The testimony and evidence presented will be taken into consideration by the court as it evaluates the merits of the petition.
