Train crushes govt staff bus in Lagos

 

On Thursday morning, a passenger train derailed and crushed a Lagos State Government staff bus in the PWD area of the state, causing numerous civil servants to sustain injuries.

Taofiq Adebayo, the spokesman for the Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) in Lagos State, confirmed the incident and reported that rescue operations are ongoing.

 

“The accident resulted in numerous fatalities, as the bus was packed with government employees heading to work this morning,” Adebayo said.

“The State Government staff bus was attempting to cross the PWD/Sogunle rail crossing when a train arriving in Lagos from Abeokuta pinned the bus to its rail,” he continued.

 

In a statement, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary (PS) of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), confirmed two deaths.

“Upon arrival of the agency’s response team at the scene of the incident, it was determined that a Viale BRT bus with an unknown registration number and a train were involved in an accident at the above-mentioned location.

 

“According to the findings of the investigation, the immediate cause of the accident was the BRT bus driver’s reckless driving while attempting to beat the train traffic signal before the moving train collided with the BRT bus.

“Unfortunately, two adults have been confirmed dead and several others are in critical condition.

The agency’s medical team (paramedics) and LASAMBUS officials have administered first aid to the injured victims, who have been stabilized and are being transported to the trauma center at LASUTH Ikeja for further treatment.

Responders present at the incident scene include the agency’s LRT at Cappa, LRT at C3, LRU paramedics at C3, Onipanu, Cappa, LASAMBUS officials, Nigeria Police Force, LASTMA, LNSC, and Nigerian Army.
