In an exclusive interview with Ejes Gist News Nigeria on Monday, Dr. Isa Abdulmumin, Acting Director of Corporate Communication at the Central Bank of Nigeria, clarified that there is no statement from the central bank instructing commercial banks to dispense and accept the old N500 and N1000 notes from Nigerians.

Abdulmumin was responding to a statement by the governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, in which he claimed that the central bank had instructed commercial banks to distribute and accept the old currency.

“Governor Charles Soludo’s statement originates from him, not the Central Bank of Nigeria,” he said. The Central Bank has not issued a statement regarding the collection of old naira notes by banks. I am certain that the bank will issue a statement in the future.”

The CBN’s silence 10 days after the Supreme Court’s ruling validating the old naira notes has continued to unnerve economic stakeholders in the midst of Nigerians’ naira crisis-related hardship.
