The Court Has Handed Down a Landmark Ruling in the Labour Party’s Case Against INEC.
In a pivotal judgment handed down by the Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday, June 27, 2024, Alhaji Prince Yusuf Asamah Kadiri SAN was confirmed as the Deputy Governorship candidate of the Labour Party for the forthcoming Edo State gubernatorial election, set for September 21, 2024.
The case, identified as Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/556/2024, was filed by the Labour Party alongside three others against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The court ruled that the nomination process for Alhaji Prince Yusuf Asamah Kadiri SAN complied meticulously with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Electoral Act, and subsidiary guidelines, as well as the Labour Party’s constitution.
The judge highlighted that the Labour Party had “over-complied” with all pertinent legal and regulatory frameworks in nominating Alhaji Prince Yusuf Asamah Kadiri SAN.

As a result, the court directed INEC to accept and process the substitution of Kadiri as the Labour Party’s Deputy Governorship candidate and to publish his name on the list of candidates for the upcoming election.
This ruling marks a crucial development in the preparations for the Edo State gubernatorial election, ensuring the Labour Party’s candidates are duly recognized and can actively participate in the electoral process.
