Olumide Akpata, the former president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), emerged victorious in the Labour Party (LP) primary election for the Edo governorship election.
Akpata secured 316 votes, surpassing other aspirants in the poll. The Edo governorship election is scheduled for September 21.

Before the primary, the former NBA president expressed concerns to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) regarding potential favoritism in the selection of the party’s flagbearer.
In a letter dated February 18 and addressed to Mahmood Yakubu, the chairman of INEC, Olumide Akpata alleged a plot within the party leadership to handpick a candidate for the election. Despite his efforts to engage the party’s leadership for transparency and accountability, he claimed they were unsuccessful.
