Court orders police to release, pay Nnamdi Kanu’s supporter N50 million

On Tuesday, the Federal High Court in Abuja issued an order compelling the Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, to free Mazi Solomon Onyegbule.

In addition to issuing the order on Tuesday, Justice Z.B. Abubakar imposed an additional N50 million in “compensatory and exemplary damages” on one of Kanu’s supporters.

Ifeanyi Ejiofor, a lawyer for Kanu and the IPOB, has stated that the court has ordered the police to apologise to Solomon Onyegbule in national newspapers.

He stated, “While delivering judgement in suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/137/2022, which we had filed on behalf of Solomon Onyegbule, the court directed the Inspector-General of Police, IGP, to immediately and unconditionally release Mazi Onyegbule from their custody.”

In addition, the judge decided that Solomon Onyegbule should be awarded the full amount of N50 million as both compensatory and exemplary damages.

“The court also ordered that an official apology be made to Mazi Solomon in one of the country’s national newspapers by the Inspector General of Police,”
