EFCC Undergoes Major Overhaul as Olukoyede Makes Significant Appointments

 

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has witnessed a significant restructuring under the leadership of its chairman, Ola Olukoyede, who recently appointed Michael Nzekwe as his chief of staff, marking a notable shake-up within the agency.

In a strategic move, Olukoyede elevated all the zonal commands of the EFCC to departments and named 14 new directors to oversee these departments, signaling a reinvigorated approach to the EFCC’s operations.

According to a statement released by EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale, the agency’s security unit has been upgraded to a department, with a designated chief security officer now leading the unit.

Oyewale emphasized the importance of bolstering the EFCC’s security architecture by appointing a seasoned officer to head the newly formed Department of Security, further enhancing the agency’s ability to combat financial crimes effectively.

Furthermore, a new department has been established within the executive chairman’s office, headed by former Makurdi zonal commander of the EFCC, Mr. Friday Ebelo. Ebelo assumes the role of director and coordinator of special duties at the commission’s corporate headquarters, reinforcing the organizational structure.

 

Michael Nzekwe, the newly appointed chief of staff, brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having previously served as the commander of the Ilorin zonal command and holding the rank of course one officer within the agency.

With a background in law and investigation, Nzekwe has contributed extensively to various departments within the EFCC, including legal and prosecution, operations (now department of investigations), internal affairs (now department of ethics and integrity), Servicom, and asset forfeiture.

Nzekwe’s professional development extends beyond national borders, as he has undergone training and courses both domestically and internationally, including the Advance Defence Intelligence Officers Course organized by the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA).
