Defiance in Enugu State as Workers Shun Nationwide Strike Call from NLC and TUC

Despite a directive from the national leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) for an indefinite nationwide strike, workers in Enugu State have defied the call and resumed their duties.

Reports gathered  indicate that workers across various sectors in Enugu State reported to their respective duty posts on Tuesday, showing non-compliance with the strike directive.

In Enugu, the state capital, banks were observed operating and providing services to customers. Additionally, government agencies witnessed the resumption of work, with employees returning to their offices.

Both private and government schools were also reported to be open, seemingly unaffected by the strike call.

The government revenue office along Zik Avenue saw workers attending to their duties, while a bank along Agbani Road continued serving its customers.

Despite the nationwide strike action declared by Organised Labour in protest of the arrest and alleged brutalization of NLC President Joe Ajaero by Police operatives in Owerri, Imo State, on November 1, workers in Enugu State have chosen not to participate.

A civil servant, speaking anonymously, expressed discontent with the leadership of both NLC and TUC, holding them responsible for the lack of compliance with the strike directive.

The source criticized the unions, stating that they failed to act when the need was most apparent.

Contrary to the strike expectations, Enugu City witnessed heavy vehicular movement on major roads, and markets remained open for business.

The defiance in Enugu State adds complexity to the ongoing labor dispute, highlighting divisions and challenges faced by the organized labor unions in mobilizing widespread support for the strike.
