The league’s decision follows complaints from Leeds United and Burnley, triggering an investigation into Everton’s financial practices in March 2023.

Despite initial denials from the club, an independent commission has found Everton guilty of recording excessive losses, resulting in the imposition of an immediate 10-point penalty.

Why Premier League deducts 10 points from Everton

In a statement, the Premier League revealed, “An independent Commission has imposed an immediate deduction of 10 points on Everton FC for a breach of the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSRs).” The club, during the proceedings, admitted to breaching the PSRs for the specified period, but the extent of the breach remained a point of contention.

The commission, following a five-day hearing, determined that Everton’s PSR Calculation for the relevant period resulted in a loss of £124.5m, surpassing the £105m threshold permitted under the PS. Consequently, the commission concluded that a 10-point deduction would be an appropriate sporting sanction, effective immediately.

This penalty has seen Everton plummet from the 14th to the 19th position in the Premier League table, tied with Burnley at four points but maintaining a higher standing due to their superior goal difference.

In response to the sanction, Everton Football Club expressed shock and disappointment, deeming the punishment disproportionate and unjust. The club has communicated its intention to appeal the decision, initiating the appeal process that will be heard by an Appeal Board appointed under the Premier League’s rules.

Everton asserts its openness and transparency in providing information to the Premier League, maintaining that it has always respected the integrity of the process.

The club disputes the finding that it failed to act with the utmost good faith and questions the severity of the sanction imposed by the Commission.
