Fani-Kayode Counters Oba of Benin’s Claims on Lagos‘ Origin, Affirms Yoruba Heritage

A fiery debate has been ignited following the recent statement made by the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, during his courtesy visit to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

The Oba’s assertion that the Bini people founded Lagos has sparked controversy, drawing strong reactions, particularly from former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode.

In response to the Oba’s claims, Fani-Kayode took to X to express his vehement disagreement. He vehemently countered the assertion, stating that historical records affirm Lagos was founded by the Yoruba, not the Bini as suggested by the Oba of Benin.

Dismissing the Oba’s claims as historical revisionism and falsehood, Fani-Kayode emphasized the Yoruba heritage of Lagos. He denounced any suggestion that Lagos is a ‘no-man’s land,’ underscoring the city’s deep-rooted Yoruba origins.

In a fervent denouncement of what he deemed as “self-serving and revisionist poppycock,” Fani-Kayode called for an end to what he termed as disingenuous information being propagated by those he referred to as “aliens, outsiders, and non-indigenes” about Lagos’ history and identity.

Commending the efforts of the Balogun of Eko, Abisoye Oshodi, for standing up to set the record straight, Fani-Kayode reiterated his stance, affirming that Lagos was established by the Yoruba and remains an integral part of the Yoruba heritage.
