The victim, however, has denied Umar’s claims, saying that he raped her.

“I went to buy sugar from his shop, then he sent me to pick a kettle for him from a house. While searching for the kettle, he grabbed and dragged me into a room and had carnal knowledge of me,” the victim said.

“Afterward, he held me by the jugular and threatened to slice my throat if I dare let anyone know of the affair. He told me that since last year, he had scores to settle with my father.”

This case is a reminder of the serious problem of sexual violence against children in Nigeria. According to a 2021 UNICEF report, one in three girls in Nigeria has experienced sexual violence before the age of 18.

It is important to note that no child can consent to sex. Sex with a minor is always rape.

If you or someone you know has been a victim of sexual violence, please reach out for help. There are many resources available, including hotlines, counseling services, and legal aid.
