FG stops budgetary funding for professional bodies

The Federal Government has made the decision to cease funding professional bodies through the annual budget. This information was conveyed in a circular sent by Ben Akabueze, the Director General of the Budget Office of the Federation (BoF), to the heads of all professional bodies in the country.

Dated June 26, 2023, the circular stated that this decision was reached during the 13th meeting of the Presidential Committee on Salaries (PCS). Akabueze informed that the PCS had approved the discontinuation of budgetary allocation to professional bodies and councils, effective from January 1, 2024.

According to the letter, this means that the Budget Office will no longer allocate funds to these institutions, and they will henceforth be considered self-funded organizations. Starting from January 1, 2024, all affected professional bodies will be responsible for their personnel, overhead, and capital expenditures.

In the 2023 budget, an allocation for professional bodies was included under the category of subscription.

 

The Auditor General’s Office proposed to spend N1,840,612 on professional bodies, while the Ministry of Communication Technology and Digital Economy proposed N268,979, the Ministry of Petroleum N2,376,747, the Ministry of Justice N1,500,000, and the Ministry of Information and Culture N3,707,633.
