FG Files 20 New Charges Against Godwin Emefiele in Abuja
In a significant legal development, the Federal Government has taken a bold step by filing 20 new charges against the suspended Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, in Abuja. Simultaneously, the government has applied to withdraw the existing “illegal possession of firearms” case against Emefiele that it had previously filed at the Federal High Court in Lagos.

The move comes after intense legal proceedings that have captured the nation’s attention. Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) at the Federal Ministry of Justice, Mohammed Bakodo Abubakar, revealed that the decision to file fresh charges is linked to the outcome of further investigations into the case.
The new charges, totaling 20 counts, have been lodged with the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Abuja. While the exact nature of these charges has not been fully disclosed, one of them notably accuses Emefiele of “conferring unlawful advantages.”

This legal twist has ignited speculation and debate about the potential implications for both Emefiele’s future and the broader legal landscape of Nigeria. The move to withdraw the Lagos case has also drawn attention, with defense counsel Joseph Daudu (SAN) opposing the application due to alleged non-compliance with the court’s earlier order granting bail to Emefiele.
The suspended CBN Governor’s initial case had garnered public interest after he was granted bail on a N20 million bond on July 25th. However, the situation took an unexpected turn when the Department of State Services (DSS) re-arrested Emefiele, leading to a confrontation with officials from the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) within the court’s premises.
As the legal proceedings continue to unfold, all eyes are on the upcoming developments and the potential impact on both Emefiele’s legal standing and Nigeria’s judicial system. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
