Ogun First Lady Voices Concerns Over Economic Challenges Amid Rising Petrol Prices and Naira Depreciation
Bamidele Abiodun, the First Lady of Ogun State, has raised her voice against the backdrop of growing economic difficulties faced by Nigerians, attributing the turmoil to escalating petrol prices and the weakening naira.
She expressed her concerns during the ninth annual convention of the Women Wing Christian Association of Nigeria (WOWICAN), South-West Zone, where she addressed a congregation of attendees.
At the convention, themed ‘Abounding Grace,’ Mrs. Abiodun painted a somber picture of the current situation in the country. She highlighted the anxiety felt by all sectors of society, including the wealthy, due to the unfolding economic challenges.
She stressed that these hardships disproportionately affect those who are less fortunate, urging empathy and understanding for the vulnerable sections of society.
Mrs. Abiodun drew attention to the skyrocketing price of petrol, noting that it has surged dramatically in recent months, further straining the financial stability of individuals and families.
She expressed skepticism about the stability of petrol prices in the immediate future, suggesting that the cost could continue to rise, leading to a ripple effect on other essential commodities.
“We all know how much we were buying petrol three or four months ago. We all know how much petrol is today and we also know that it is not even steady yet,” she remarked.
Highlighting the interconnectedness of economic factors, she cautioned that a rise in fuel prices can trigger an increase in the cost of living across the board.
The price hikes could impact everyday expenses, including food and transportation, exacerbating the challenges faced by ordinary citizens.
The First Lady also voiced her unease over the rapid depreciation of the Nigerian naira. She called on Nigerians to lean on their faith and seek divine intervention as they navigate these tough times.
The backdrop of her remarks centered on President Bola Tinubu’s economic decisions and policies. Since taking office, these decisions have attracted widespread criticism for their alleged contribution to the economic turmoil and increasing poverty levels in the country.

Amidst the soaring prices of essential goods and services, the Tinubu regime has faced criticism for not implementing palliative measures to alleviate the hardships faced by Nigerians.
There have been claims of potential misappropriation of the N500 billion earmarked by President Tinubu to address the economic challenges, further fanning the flames of discontent among the populace.
As Nigerians continue to grapple with these economic challenges, voices like that of Mrs. Abiodun’s remind the nation of the urgent need for measures to stabilize the economy and alleviate the burden on its citizens.
