Finidi George resigns as Super Eagles’ coach after humiliating results; says he’s not hungry

Finidi George has stepped down from his position as head coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria. The resignation follows a strategic move by the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) to bring in a foreign technical adviser, a decision that seemingly signaled a lack of confidence in George’s leadership.

Appointed in May, George’s tenure has been marred by the Super Eagles’ disappointing performance in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. The team’s underwhelming results led to increasing calls for his removal, ultimately culminating in his resignation.

The news was first broken by Nigerian sports journalist Adepoju Tobi Samuel, who posted on the social media platform X on Saturday, June 15. “My source has told me that Finidi George has resigned from his role as the Super Eagles’ head coach,” Samuel tweeted.

Echoing this sentiment, Sulaiman Pooja Adebayo, another sports journalist with insights into the situation, noted that George’s resignation followed what he described as a “stylish demotion” upon the arrival of the new foreign technical adviser.

Finidi George, a former head coach of Enyimba FC, took the reins of the Super Eagles with high hopes. However, his stint was short-lived, as the team struggled to find form under his guidance during the critical World Cup qualifying matches. His departure underscores the NFF’s urgent need to address the team’s performance issues ahead of future competitions.

In the wake of George’s resignation, the NFF is expected to expedite the integration of the foreign technical adviser in hopes of revitalizing the team’s prospects on the international stage.

“Finidi tendered his resignation on Thursday and said he was not hungry and they should bugger off,” an NFF official informed  Ejes Gist News on Saturday afternoon.

As of the time of this publication, the resignation has yet to be officially announced, and both Finidi and the government officials involved have yet to publicly comment on the matter.
