Fire Ravages Yobe State University Female Hostel; Governor Buni Assures Support
In a tragic incident on Tuesday, a fire outbreak engulfed the Female Hostel at Yobe State University, Damaturu, leaving eight students traumatized by a cooking gas cylinder explosion. The incident occurred around 7 pm, prompting an immediate response from the university’s management and emergency services.
The fire, originating from a cooking gas cylinder in New Females Hostel A, was swiftly contained by the collaborative efforts of Yobe State University’s fire brigade and the state fire service. Despite the intensity of the blaze, no lives were lost, as confirmed by the university’s management in an official statement.
Eight students affected by the gas explosion were promptly admitted to the University clinic and specialist hospital in Damaturu for necessary medical attention. The quick and efficient evacuation ensured the safety of all students residing in the affected hostel.

Expressing his condolences, State Governor Mai Mala Buni, through his Director General Press and Media Affairs, Mamman Muhammad, described the inferno as unfortunate but expressed gratitude that no lives were lost. Governor Buni directed immediate efforts to provide alternative accommodation for the affected female students.
“We remain grateful that in spite of the huge fire that razed down the hostel, no life was lost,” Governor Buni stated. He further directed the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to supply food, clothing, and bedding to the affected students while the government actively seeks alternative accommodations.
Governor Buni urged students and residents to exercise vigilance and prevent actions that could lead to fire incidents. He also assured a comprehensive investigation into the remote and immediate causes of the fire disaster to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
