ICT Expert Urges Targeted Awareness Campaigns for Data Protection Education

Mr Jide Awe, an ICT expert and Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) Policy Advisor, has advised the Federal Government to conduct focused awareness campaigns to enhance education on data protection. In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday, Awe emphasized the importance of raising awareness, especially during the National Data Privacy Week observed from Jan. 28 to Feb. 4.

Organized by the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) under the theme “Take Control of Your Data,” the National Privacy Week aligns with Global Privacy Day on Jan. 28, aiming to promote awareness about data privacy.

Awe highlighted that Nigeria’s data privacy ecosystem is still emerging, making it essential to concentrate on promoting data protection for long-term compliance rather than revenue generation. He emphasized that many individuals are not aware of their right to access and control personal information, exposing them to potential risks associated with data breaches and misuse.

Referring to the Nigeria Data Protection Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan (NDP-SRAP) 2023-2027, Awe suggested a multifaceted approach, with targeted awareness campaigns tailored to different groups based on their specific risks and needs. This approach should consider vulnerabilities and accessibility for impactful campaigns, including specialized approaches for children, the elderly, students, workers, organizations, and those in rural areas.

Awe proposed the integration of data privacy literacy into the school system and promoting career opportunities related to data protection to enhance awareness within the education system. He also recommended citizen engagement through workshops, the development of data protection skills, and the offering of free or subsidized programs for broader participation.

Highlighting the need for diverse communication channels, Awe suggested utilizing physical materials, online resources, social media, traditional media, and local languages as appropriate. He emphasized the importance of promoting a privacy-by-design culture and the necessity for behavioral and attitudinal shifts, while encouraging increased collaboration with the NDPC.

Awe concluded by underlining the fundamental role of the data privacy ecosystem in fostering trust, innovation, and sustainable growth in the digital era. He highlighted that the enactment of the Nigeria 2023 positions the country as an innovative 21st-century digital economy, benefiting both individuals and organizations by addressing concerns about data breaches, misuse, and lack of control.
