Twenty-Five Groups Seek Political Party Status Ahead of 2027 Elections – INEC
In preparation for the 2027 general elections, twenty-five political associations have submitted applications to be registered as political parties, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Mr. Sam Olumekun, the National Commissioner and Chairman of Information and Voter Education Committee of INEC, revealed this during the Public Presentation of the ‘NEEDS Assessment of Political Parties in Nigeria,’ a gathering organized by the Kukah Centre and the European Union (EU).
Addressing the audience on behalf of the INEC Chairman, Olumekun highlighted the significant role of political parties in the country’s democratic landscape.

He noted that despite criticisms directed at INEC, especially in recent months, the emergence of the National Assembly is attributed to the political parties.
Olumekun emphasized the growing interest in political participation, stating, “As at today we have about 25 political associations that have applied that they want to register as political parties. If political parties are not functioning well, why are groups coming up to seek registration as political parties?”
He referenced a period where numerous political parties existed before being reduced to 19 due to legal requirements. The resurgence of interest from various associations to obtain political party status signals a renewed drive for political engagement and representation in the country.
The move by these groups to seek recognition as political parties indicates a potential shift or expansion in the political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The INEC remains pivotal in the registration process, ensuring that these associations meet the requisite criteria for official recognition as political entities.
