Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Urges Stronger Action Against Insecurity, Disapproves of Negotiations with Bandits
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has voiced strong condemnation against the purported negotiations between the Tinubu-led administration and bandits.
In a stern statement, the association emphasized that if the federal government finds itself struggling to combat terrorism and insecurity, it should seek assistance from external sources rather than engage in talks with criminal elements.
Sunday Oibe, the Secretary of CAN’s North-West Zone, firmly asserted that terms like “unknown gunmen” and “bandits” should hold no weight, as successive governments are well-acquainted with these groups and, dishearteningly, may even be engaging in negotiations with them.
Oibe’s remarks come in response to allegations made by the Zamfara State government, claiming that the federal government has been involved in negotiations with bandits, with purported evidence to support this assertion.
Expressing his dismay, Oibe stated, “It’s shameful and disgusting for the Nigerian state to keep doing this to us as a people. We have been hearing the expression, ‘unknown gunmen’ did this and that, over and over again.
Suddenly, the unknown gunmen are now known to the point that the federal might is even allowing some of its officials to enter into negotiation with the bandits.”
He went on to emphasize that these incidents are not isolated acts by obscure groups, but rather part of an organized crime against the helpless citizens.

Oibe insisted that successive governments are well-acquainted with these groups, and in some cases, have empowered them to act against the interests of the general populace.
In conclusion, Oibe urged the Nigerian state to demonstrate the political will necessary to eradicate these criminal elements entirely, rather than resorting to negotiations.
He stressed that seeking external assistance should be considered if the nation finds itself unable to resolve this pressing issue independently.
The Christian Association of Nigeria’s strong stance underscores the urgency of addressing the complex challenges posed by insecurity and terrorism within the nation.
