The Lagos state government has officially verified the presence of anthrax disease in six animals within the state.
The disease primarily affects ruminants like cows, sheep, and goats.
Olatokunbo Emokpae, the permanent secretary of the state’s ministry of agriculture, disclosed that the cases were found during animal surveillance in Lagos Island and Agege.

To prevent further transmission, the affected animals have been confiscated, incinerated, and buried.
Although no instances of human infection have been reported since the discovery of anthrax disease in Lagos, authorities have increased both human and animal surveillance and are providing free vaccinations as a precautionary measure.
According to Emokpae, animal owners are encouraged to participate in the vaccination program by bringing their herds for inoculation.
If they observe any symptoms in animals, they should promptly report the cases to the Director of Veterinary Services at the Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture.
