ECOWAS Delegation Arrives in Niger for Crucial Talks Amidst Growing Regional Tensions.

Niamey, Niger – In a bid to address the escalating crisis in Niger Republic, a high-level delegation from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), led by former Nigeria’s Head of State Abdulsalami Abubakar, has landed in Niamey for a final discussion with the military junta headed by General Abdourahamane Tchiani.

The delegation’s arrival comes on the heels of heightened tensions within the region following the military chiefs’ announcement that they were prepared to intervene and reinstate the ousted President Mohamed Bazoum.

The ECOWAS delegation, which also includes the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, will be joined by the United Nations Special Representative for West Africa and the Sahel, Leonardo Santos Simao, who arrived on Friday.

This gathering of influential figures aims to facilitate a resolution to the ongoing crisis that has engulfed Niger Republic.

The delegation’s plane touched down in the capital city, Niamey, at around 1:00 p.m. local time, confirming the seriousness and urgency of the talks.

 

The governing military council of Niger acknowledged the presence of the ECOWAS representatives, highlighting the significance of their visit.

However, neighboring countries Burkina Faso and Mali appear to be undeterred by the ECOWAS Military Chiefs’ threat of intervention in Niger. Reports suggest that both Burkina Faso and Mali have taken proactive measures by deploying warplanes close to Niger’s borders. These Super Tucano fighter jets are part of their tangible response to any potential military intervention.
