“30-Year-Old Faces Charges of Theft, Criminal Intimidation, and Inciting Disturbance”

A 30-year-old man named Tum Joseph was arraigned before an Upper Customary Court in Kafanchan, Kaduna State, on Tuesday, facing charges of stealing a mattress and clothes from his own mother, Bridget.

The defendant is charged with three counts, including criminal intimidation, inciting disturbance of public peace, and theft. According to the police prosecutor, Insp Esther Bishen, the defendant’s mother reported the incident at the Kafanchan Divisional Police Station on July 7.

During the court proceedings, the prosecutor explained that Bridget was nursing her sick husband in the hospital when she received information that her son had taken several items from their residence in Ungwan Fari, Kafanchan.

The stolen items included a mattress, two containers of herbicide chemicals, 10 yards of wrapper, and some of her husband’s clothes.

The investigation led to the recovery of the mattress from the defendant. Moreover, the prosecutor revealed that Tum Joseph not only stole from his mother but also insulted and called her names.

The charges leveled against him are in violation of the provisions of sections 378, 76, and 270 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law.

In response to the charges, Tum Joseph pleaded not guilty to the allegations. The prosecutor requested an adjournment to allow the police to call witnesses and present evidence to support their case.

Presiding judge, Mr. George Gwani, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N20,000 (Nigerian Naira) and required a surety in a similar amount who must be his uncle.

The court adjourned the matter until September 5 for further hearing and proceedings.

The case has drawn public attention and raises questions about family relationships and the importance of respecting the rights of parents and caretakers.
