Efforts Underway to Locate Missing Nigerian Academic, Dr. Dipo Fasina, as Nigerian Community in Turkey and Embassy Mobilize Resources

The Nigerian community in Turkey, alongside the Nigerian Embassy, is actively utilizing their networks to determine the location of Dr. Dipo Fasina, a former President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The academic community in Nigeria has been gripped by uncertainty following the disappearance of Dr. Fasina, fondly known as Jingo by his students at Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife, Osun State. The incident occurred on Saturday, July 1st.

The President of ASUU, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, and the chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, have both confirmed his disappearance.

Prince Emre Magbo, President of the Nigerian Community Turkey, and Enifome Ubogu, Vice President, have initiated a search in collaboration with the Nigerian Embassy in Turkey.

“We have activated all our contacts within Turkey to work together with the Nigerian Embassy in Turkey to determine his whereabouts, assuming he actually arrived in Turkey.”

According to reports, Dr. Fasina was enroute to Algeria, having received an invitation from the Algerian government, when he apparently missed his connecting flight in Istanbul, Turkey. Fasina dipo

Since then, his whereabouts have remained unknown, leaving many concerned about Dr. Fasina’s fate.

At the age of 76, Dr. Fasina dedicated over three decades to teaching Philosophy at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU). Throughout his career, he faced numerous detentions in Nigeria due to his Marxist views and ideologies.

During the fervent struggles to validate the June 12, 1993 presidential election, which was won by the late Chief MKO Abiola, Dr. Fasina actively participated in protests held in Ile-Ife, Osogbo, Ibadan, Lagos, and various other cities.

After completing his PhD at the University of California, Los Angeles, Dr. Fasina joined OAU in 1979.
