Arrests Accountant over alleged racketeering

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has arrested a fuel station accountant in Abuja’s Dutse Alhaji neighborhood.

In a statement released on Friday in Abuja, the Commission’s spokesperson, Mrs. Azuka Ogugua, stated that the accountant was arrested for alleged new Naira note racketeering.

According to her, this latest arrest follows the commission’s continued assault on those who have taken advantage of the scarcity of new Naira notes to defraud naive Nigerians.

Ogugua stated that the Commission’s Monitoring Team had previously received a tip that the aforementioned fuel station intentionally disconnected its Point of Sale (POS) services to facilitate its fraudulent activities.

“Therefore, motorists could not access Premium Motor Spirit, commonly known as fuel, with their Automated Teller Machine (ATM) cards.

“Upon arriving at the gas station, the team discovered that customers were required to pay in cash, and those without new bills were directed to a POS operator directly across from the station to withdraw cash.

“ICPC agents discovered that the POS not only belonged to the accountant of the Filling Station, but was also engaging in excessive charges in violation of the directive of the Central Bank of Nigeria” ().

“One million Nigerian naira (N1,000,000) was discovered with the POS operator, and the team instructed that it be deposited into a bank account.”

Ogugua stated that the accountant and POS operator were promptly arrested and that “the Commission has granted administrative bail to both of them.”
