The widespread outage has affected numerous regions, with most Distribution Companies (DisCos) reporting that their feeders are non-operational. Historical data on grid collapses reveals a troubling pattern. In 2013, the country experienced 24 power system collapses, followed by 13 incidents in 2014. The frequency increased to 28 collapses in 2016 and subsequently decreased to 21 in 2017. Notably, the grid recorded 13, 11, four, and four collapses in 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021, respectively. However, the trend took a concerning turn with approximately 10 collapses between 2022 and the current year.

The recurrence of grid collapses highlights the persistent challenges facing Nigeria’s power sector. As citizens grapple with the consequences of prolonged blackouts, questions arise about the resilience and stability of the nation’s energy infrastructure.
