Nationwide blackout looms in the country as generation falls below 4,000mw, 

 

Power generation to the national grid dipped below 4,000 megawatts over the weekend, leaving customers across the nation with a limited supply of electricity.

Checks of data supplied by the National System Operator, NSO, an independent arm of the Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, revealed that only 18 of the country’s 25 power plants supplied electricity to the grid.

Additional checks revealed that generation as of noon yesterday was 3,518.7MW, a decrease of 18.6% compared to the average generation recorded last Friday of 4,324.1MW.

 

The power plant with the largest decrease was Azura-Edo IPP, which recorded 256MW compared to 403,18MW last week. The Azura-Edo website revealed that two of its three-generation units were connected to the power grid.

Egbin Power (529MW), Delta Power (502MW), and Kainji Hydro (442MW) were the three largest suppliers to the grid.

 

The amount owed to GenCos reaches N202.6bn

 

The Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Plc provided Ejes Gist News Nigeria with data indicating that the amount owed to the generation companies in 2022 was N202.6 billion.

NBET reported that GenCos were owed an additional N24.22 billion for power supplied to the grid in January 2023.

DisCos move to appease consumers

Electricity distribution companies moved to explain the situation after numerous customers expressed their frustration on social media.

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) explained that transmission facility problems caused the power outage in parts of the capital city.

“The management of Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc. (AEDC) wishes to inform its esteemed customers in E2 Injection Substation feeding FHA Lugbe, Back of Dunamis and environs, Kuje, Pegi, Piwoyi and environs that the power outage they are currently experiencing is due to a fault on the 33kV Feeder H21 from the Apo, Abuja Transmission Station.
