Record Performance in 2023 Examination; Integrity Concerns Addressed

The National Examinations Council (NECO) has announced the results of the 2023 Internal Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination, revealing a noteworthy achievement with 61.60 per cent of candidates attaining five credits or more, including English and Mathematics.

However, NECO disclosed a disconcerting issue of integrity. A total of 93 schools were implicated in large-scale cheating, and 52 supervisors were recommended for blacklisting due to inadequate supervision and involvement in malpractice during the examinations.

A staggering 1,196,985 candidates participated in the examinations, comprising 616,398 males and 580,587 females. Notably, 1,543 candidates with special needs also took part.

Among them, 913 had hearing impairments, 162 had visual impairments, 103 had albinism, 61 had autism, 149 had low vision, and 154 were classified as adermatoglyphic (individuals lacking fingerprints).

Of these candidates, 737,308, accounting for 61.60 per cent, achieved five credits or more. Furthermore, 1,013,611 candidates, equivalent to 84.68 per cent, secured five credits, regardless of English and Mathematics.

Addressing the integrity concerns, Prof. Wushishi emphasized NECO’s commitment to identifying and penalizing errant schools and supervisors.

The 93 schools implicated in mass cheating will undergo discussions and subsequent sanctions. Additionally, 52 supervisors face blacklisting due to their involvement in irregularities during the examination.

The NECO boss officially declared the release of the 2023 Senior School Certificate Examination Internal results, enabling candidates to access their scores via the NECO website: www.neco.gov.ng, using their examination registration numbers.

This significant performance is commendable, but the identified integrity lapses serve as a reminder of the continuous need for vigilance and accountability in the education system. NECO’s commitment to upholding the standards of education in Nigeria remains resolute.
