NEMA Warns of Heavy Rainfall and Potential Flooding in 13 States and 50 Communities.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has issued a warning stating that 13 states and 50 communities, primarily in the northern regions of Nigeria, are at risk of experiencing heavy rainfall that could result in flooding between September 13 and 17.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Ibrahim Farinloye, the territorial coordinator of NEMA Lagos, conveyed this important information. The agency’s alert aims to prepare residents and local authorities for possible flooding and its associated consequences.

The states identified in the advisory include Kano (specifically Sumaila and Kunchi), Kebbi (Argungu), Katsina (Bindawa, Jibia, Kaita, and Katsina), Niger (Kontagora, Mashegu, and New Bussa), Kwara (Kosubosu), Zamfara (Kaura Namoda and Shinkafi), Bauchi (encompassing Bajoga, Darazo, Kirfi, Azare, Jama ‘are, Itas, and Misau), Taraba (covering Bali, Donga, Lau, Serti, Mutum-Biyu, and Yorro), and Borno (including Briyel, Biu, Dikwa, and Kukawa).

Additionally, the warning extends to Adamawa (Ganye, Mubi, Demsa, Jimeta, Mayo Belwa, Numan, Shelleng, and Song), Yobe (Dapchi, Gashua, Geidam, Kanamma, Machina, and Potiskum), Gombe (specifically Nafada), and Jigawa (including Dutse, Gumel, Gwaram, and Miga).

NEMA emphasized that due to the increasing water levels in the Rivers Benue and Niger, communities situated near these rivers up to Bayelsa are strongly advised to take precautionary measures in the coming days. These measures are essential to mitigate the potential impact of flooding on lives and property.

The agency urged residents and local authorities in the affected regions to stay informed about weather updates, maintain a state of readiness, and adhere to evacuation notices or safety guidelines provided by relevant authorities to ensure their safety.

As the rainy season continues, vigilance and preparedness are essential to minimize the risks associated with heavy rainfall and potential flooding.
